By inference, I assume they can go out of column mode in a city hex but if they want to move, they will have to get back in column mode.
Good assumption?
I'm thinking of tanks moving in to take out Frost's men.

The Terrain Effects Chart says tracked units cannot move into a city hex unless in column mode but I don't see anything that prohibits those tracked units
from being in city hexes not in column mode.

Nope. Tracked or wheeled units may never leave column when in city hexes (or other terrain so marked on the TEC). You can use tanks on Frost but they will be
at a disadvantage in the city.

Is it always true for a infantry unit or a gun unit mounted on vehicles ?
That is : could a tracked or wheeled unit in column in towns or cities exit Transport mode and flip over to its non-vehicle side or should it exit Transport mode before entering town or city hex ? |

Yes they can. When a dismount take place, a Unit can either be in column or not, at the owner's choice (see 14.10.3. in the Series Rules).

Reciprocally, can a unit directly "mounting up" in column in a city or town hex or must it first be in column and then "mounting up" (and
keep its column marker) as suggested by 14.10.2 ?
Thanks in advance |

The unit must first be in column to mount up in a hex that requires a vehicle to be in column.

no matter what the terrain, when a unit takes a cohesion hit it stays in column if it was in Column.
The 14.6 "taking a cohesion hit" is a voluntary thing you can do to leave column not a combat result. taking a cohesion hit to leave column allows 2 things: 1) it does not generate an opportunity fire attack 2) it allows you to leave column in the same Action that you spent 1 MP to enter Column.

When a unit that has generic transportation (on the flip side) is in transportation mode do you have a column marker placed on it when in restricted hexes such
as city or town hexes. Therefore suffering the +2 mod for def on the column marker. this would be in addition to the def rating on the transportation side. Is
that correct or is this all taken into account on the transportation side of the counter. Hope that is clear.

Yes, you have to place the column marker on the unit when it's on its transport side and it is in column. So it's get the +2 for the column marker,
plus the defense rating of the transport side (many of these are +2 or +3).
